Technology Aids in Locating Sites of Previous Breast Biopsies

New technology is helping doctors locate the sites of previous breast biopsies, allowing for more accurate and efficient post-biopsy lesion tracking.

Artemis Medical Inc. announced the commercial release of the MammoMark Biopsy Site Identifier for breast biopsy site identification, using self-expanding collagen with a centrally located titanium clip.

When placed in the site of the biopsy, the MammoMark rapidly hydrates and conforms to the size and shape of the area removed for biopsy. This gives doctors the ability to precisely locate a biopsy site using ultrasound or mammography.

Within a few weeks, the body absorbs the collagen material but the clip remains for future site identification.

"The Artemis MammoMark offers several advantages over current marking devices," said Dr. Laurie Fajardo, Chief of Breast Imaging and Intervention in the Russell Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. "The MammoMark provides an improved means of locating the biopsy site using ultrasound imaging which other devices do not, as well as a means of centrally marking the biopsy site."
