Study: Multiple Miscarriages May Up Breast Cancer Risk After Menopause

Women who have multiple miscarriages may be at increased risik of developing breast cancer after menopause, according to French researchers.

However, the researchers reported no apparent link between induced abortions and breast cancer.

The researchers at Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, who conducted a study involving 100,000 women, said an effort to establish a link between miscarriage and breast cancer risk yielded conflicting results.

"There is a suggestion of increased risk with increased number of miscarriages," the researchers reported in the International Journal of Cancer.

"Moreover, an interaction with menopausal status was observed," the researchers said. "In premenopause, the risk decreased with increasing number of spontaneous abortions, whereas it increased in postmenopause."

But rhe researchers said their analysis "showed no association between a history of induced abortion and breast cancer risk."

"We conclude that there is no relationship between breast cancer and induced abortion but that an association with spontaneous abortion is possible and may depend on menopausal status," the researchers said..
