The Florida
Breast Cancer Coalition is hoping to raise funds for breast cancer
research and education by securing state approval of a new license
plate promoting breast cancer awareness.
The sponsors
of the initiative said that if they submit signatures of 15,000
licensed Florida drivers by September, the new plate can be voted
on by the Florida Legislature next February and the plate can
be issued by the summer of 2002.
They said sale
of the special license plate has the potential of raising more than
$3 million annually in a state that has the third highest rate of
breast cancer in the country.
"Money for
research is the only way to find out what causes breast cancer,
how to cure breast cancer, and most importantly, how to prevent
cancer," said Jane Torres, president of the FBCC.
