2 NM Men Sue Employer After Developing Breast Cancer

Two men who work in the same office developed breast cancer and are now suing their employer.

Arthur Slater and James Montano work for the Bernalillo County assessor's office in Albuquerque, which they claim is a toxic workplace, saying that the office smells like burnt motor oil and they were interrupted at work by frequent evacuations of the building.

The lawsuit lists 15 concerns that the men claim the city and county never resolved, including excessive levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide, fiberglass and mold. The office was located directly across the hall from the electrical vault that supplied the power for the entire 11-story building causing a problem with electromagnetic fields in the assessor's office, according to the men's suit.

The assessor's employees have been relocated to a different building but the office is now being occupied by the city's Public Works Department. A third male co-worker of Slater and Montano, who has chosen to remain anonymous, has also developed breast cancer.
